Autism general information
Autism can be diagnosed between 18-24 months of age but may not be diagnosed until 3-5 years old.
If your child is diagnosed and is less than 3, look into early intervention in your area. If your child is between 3-5, look into early services provided by your school district depending on your state.
Seek out speech and language services if your child is not talking or if you can't understand your child. Some speech therapists also provide feeding therapy for children with limited foods that they will eat.

Total communication
I advocate a total communication approach. This means that we use everything that we can to encourage children to communicate.
Start early using picture communication, sign language, gestures, and verbal speech to communicate.
Don't know sign language? Neither did I. But it didn't stop me from teaching it to a 21-year-old and a 1-year-9-month-old who weren't able to use other means of communication.
Check out the free sign language resources that I used using the button below.
There are a lot of programs that can be found for Ipad and android devices devoted to assisting with communication. More information on these will be added to the AAC section in the future.
